Can you tell me more about Lunar Influences? (9/10/01)

Did you know that the Moon’s transit through a particular Astrological sign can indicate improvement in certain activities? All of us go through life scheduling appointments to accomplish certain tasks, but few of us realize that the influence of the Moon can assist in the accomplishment of the tasks. For hundreds of years, farming and fishing societies have relied on the placement of the moon to determine the best time to set out nets, plant certain crops, set sail and return to land, breed animals, harvest crops, and even can or dry their product. Many older almanacs listed astronomical (astrological) phenomena, agricultural forecasts, weather forecasts, recipes and advice for the upcoming year.

The use of almanacs date back to ancient times and it is possible that the term, itself, is an Arabic-Spanish term, "almanakh" (manakh, meaning calendar). Approximately 1267, Roger Bacon had used the term when speaking of lists that showed the movement of planets over a period of time. Although Benjamin Franklin was not the first American to author an almanac in the United States (Poor Richard’s Almanack, 1733), his was a very popular almanac during its time. These early almanacs could be compared to the current magazines that so many of us enjoy today. In the United States, the Old Farmer’s Almanac, dating back to 1793, continues to be published.

Many of our modern societies have pushed aside the belief that scheduling our activities around the placement of the Moon could help to improve our daily routines. However, many cultures continue to embrace the forecasting found in the almanacs, failing to recognize that the dates are a reflection of astrological speculation.
